David Brognon & Stéphanie Rollin, by Hélène Guenin

“Explorers of the abyss”, David Brognon and Stéphanie Rollin have since 2006 been probing the existential fault lines, observing the fallen and the alienated. Permanently rubbing shoulders with the fringes of society, they create modest monuments to people who have fallen by the wayside. No indulgence or temptation in their fascination for the marginal, which is initially driven by the search for a spark in the darkness. Addiction and melancholy exist side by side, but without chatter or literalness. For their work does not shout, it whispers. Its point of entry is the shared secret, trust.

The artists, winners in 2013 of the Pirelli Art Prize at Art Brussels and the subject of a monograph this summer at Frac Poitou-Charentes, are just as attentive to “life’s small epiphanies”, as the artist Ian Breakwell called them, the minutiae of everyday life, those moments of grace in the darkness or the commonplace. They heighten with infinite delicacy the brilliance of the inconsequential and the habitually neglected by recording the nobility of trivia.

“Love will Tear us apart” by Claude Lévêque

Shadows caress the floors where multicoloured confetti proves to be a directly accessible trap. Ash rekindled on the other side of a hypothetical manifesto. The lines on the hand become luminescent rays lighting the paradoxically covert known or seen destinies. Dishonest paths or existential deviances from the too banal resonate. Without an apparent motive beneath the combinations of fictitious codes the masked real builds itself into strongholds of empty dreams and insignificant desires. Being nothing in a crowd other than a number in an amount. Simply survive. Vitrified angel dust. Scarified skins, imprisoned desires. Pierced tongues, ghosts perforated with hardened black suns from where the torments emanate. Mute childhood injuries shatter into exiled pieces. Game over. The boy slips on a mourning garment in the darkness of the bedroom. He turns and turns again as a repeated farewell to the low-angled sun. The deactivated doorway’s mechanism casts us aside from his own protection. Far behind life.
